‘The wind almost blows you off your bike, but your momentum keeps you balanced.’ It may be the line that best captures ‘Heel Veel Licht’. On his new single, Hendrik Lasure follows a life in constant motion: sometimes unsteady, sometimes ordinary, but always moving forward.
Following the shadowy ‘Prooi’, ‘Heel Veel Licht’ is the second single from ‘De Val’, Lasure’s new album, out on 20 November. The song drifts freely between ages and moments, from childhood wonder to an imagined old age. Gradually, these fragments form a small world of their own.
That idea of a world in miniature also finds its way into the artwork for ‘De Val’. The cover depicts a scale model: a small, inevitably imperfect version of something much larger. ‘Heel Veel Licht’ likewise finds something expansive in small, passing moments.
Musically, Lasure keeps his eyes on the road ahead. A steady drum machine presses on, joined by Meskerem Mees on electric bass and Jolan Decaesteker (Ão) on guitar, with production by Koen Gisen. Together, they give ‘Heel Veel Licht’ an exuberant, free-spirited feel: music that gathers speed and finds its balance along the way.
The chorus shares that lightness of touch. There is no grand lesson about life, just an invitation to be a little less cautious: ‘Let yourself go, overflow, fill the world with light.’
